Utsynet opnar seg mot Vågåvatnet, mot Nordherad og Jutulberget med Jutulporten. Vågåmo med den ustyrlege Finna og ny bru etter flaumen, og åa Nugga. Lengre aust dei store gardane i Finntryu, Blessom, Øy, Sve, Sandbu. Den nye køyrevegen ligg som eit band vestover Vollane. Under alléen frå Uleberg køyrer folk med hest og vogn, søndagar på kyrkjeveg. Lengst framme i kyrkja ventar Henning Munch sitt målarstykke av syndefallet. Mellom Jutulberget og Finna ligg prestegarden Ullinsvin med ein allé mot tunet. Utover moane husklyngene og jordlappar kransa av steinmurar. Der lever prestens husmenn. Bortanfor Sundbrua held køyrevegen fram langsetter vatnet og markerer viker og nes. Vinterstid er isen framleis hovudveg.

WHAT DID EDVARD MUNCH SEE WHEN HE CAME TO VÅGÅ IN 1895?

The view opens up towards lake Vågåvatn, towards Nordherad and the Jutulberget crag with Jutulporten (the giants’ gate). Vågåmo village with the wild river Finna and a new bridge built after the flood, and the Nugga river. Further east are the large farms at Finntryu, Blessom, Øy, Sve, Sandbu.

The new road stretches like a ribbon west across Vollane. Along the tree-lined alley from Uleberg people travel by horse and cart to church on Sundays. Inside the church is Henning Munch’s painting of the fall of man.

Between Jutulberget and Finna is Ullinsvin rectory with a tree-lined avenue leading to the yard. Across the heathland are clusters of farm cottages and fields encircled by stone walls. This is where the crofters live. Onwards from the Sundbrua bridge, the road meanders along the bays and headlands. During winter, the main route is still across the ice.
