Ibsen hadde nettopp kome heim til Norge etter mange år i Tyskland og Italia. Han vart fengsla av Munch sine bilete. Etter ei rekkje negative meldingar i pressa kom Ibsen med desse oppmuntrande orda til kunstnaren:

«Tro mig, det vil gaa dem som mig, jo flere fiender jo flere venner.»
Munch måla teaterplakaten til Ibsen si fyrste Peer Gynt-oppsetting i Paris i 1896 og til «Johan Gabriel Borkman» i 1897. Gjennom livet teikna han svært mange motiv frå Peer Gynt, mellom anna «Peer dagdrømmer» (1930). Munch laga ei rekkje teikningar, trykk og måleri knytt til båe skodespela.

DID YOU KNOW THAT MUNCH PAINTED THE THEATRE POSTER FOR IBSEN’S STAGING OF PEER GYNT IN PARIS?

Munch was very familiar with Ibsen’s works, and had the pleasure of meeting him in 1895 when holding an individual exhibition at Blomqvist. Ibsen had just returned to Norway after many years in Germany and Italy. He was captivated by Munch’s paintings. After a series of negative articles in the media, he offered the artist the following encouraging words:

“Believe me, you will experience the same fate as I – the more enemies, the more friends.”

Munch painted the theatre poster for Ibsen’s first staging of Peer Gynt in Paris in 1896, and also for “Johan Gabriel Borkman” in 1897. He drew numerous Peer Gynt motifs throughout his life, including “Peer Daydreams” (1930). Munch made a series of drawings, prints and paintings associated with both plays.
